centos 8 明年正式停止維護，以後再也不會有免費的 rhel 了!
centos 是 community enterprise operating system（社群企業作業系統）的首字母縮寫，是 100％ 重建的 rhel（紅帽企業 linux）。儘管 rhel 需要花錢，但 centos 是免費的，社群支援的企業 linux 發行版。擅長 linux 且不想支付 rhel 支援費的開發人員和公司總是選擇 centos 來節省資金並獲得企業級軟體。
但是，現在免費乘車已經結束了！紅帽宣布，作為 rhel 8 的重建版本，centos linux 8 將在 2021 年結束。
centos 專案以後將重點轉移到 centos stream，centos stream 是乙個滾動發布的 linux 發行版，它介於 fedora linux 的上游開發和 rhel 的下游開發之間而存在。你可以把 centos streams 當成是用來體驗最新紅帽系 linux 特性的乙個版本。換句話說，centos stream 是 rhel 的滾動發行版。它充當 fedora 和 centos 之間的閘道器。
明年，我們將把重點從重建 rhel 的 centos linux 轉移到 centos stream。centos stream 將作為 red hat enterprise linux 的上游（開發）分支。也就是說，以後，fedora 依然是第乙個上游，但是在 rhel 發布新版本之後，centos stream 會在它的基礎上滾動更新，並將成熟的更新反哺到 rhel 當中。
fedora linux ➡️ centos stream ➡️ rhel當然，在 centos linux 8 結束時，你可以考慮遷移到 centos stream 8，它會像傳統的 centos linux 版本一樣定期更新。但是，切記，這是乙個作為 rhel 中游的滾動發行版，並不太建議你在生產環境中使用。
centos 7 將繼續在 rhel 7 生命週期內 (2024 年底)繼續得到支援。因此對 centos 7 使用者暫時沒有影響。
centos 的主要優點是與 rhel 提供 100% 的二進位制相容性。紅帽這次的變更肯定會對 centos 使用者造成影響。
