撇號的主要有以下用法：
1) 表示名詞或不定代詞的所有格。
構成規則： 不以s結尾單複數名詞加's， 如john's bike 。
以s結尾的單複數名詞加'， 如student' room 。
以s結尾的單數名語加's或' , 如charles' brother / charles's brother 。
2) 表示數學、符號、字母或詞形本身的複數。
如： he got many a's during this final exam. 他在期末考試中得了很多 a。
3) 表示單詞中的省略。
